Michael Ridgeway: Virtual Reality games and an Upper-Limb Exoskeleton geared at aiding Physical Therapy patients

Previously, the Bionics Lab at UC Santa Cruz implemented Virtual Reality games with an Upper-Limb Exoskeleton 
for Stroke patients to perform Physical Therapy. The previously developed Virtual Reality games were developed using Microsoft 
Robotics Studio and the C# programming language. In this project, the previous games were redeveloped using the C++ programming
language and CHAI-3D libraries. The Virtual Reality games were designed to test and 
improve a patient’s physical performance while also being enjoyable for the patient. 
 The Virtual Reality games were tested using the Phantom Omni haptic device. The goal for the future 
is to test the games with the Upper-Limb Exoskeleton. Eventually the Virtual Reality games and Upper-Limb Exoskeleton 
will provide users, especially Physical Therapy patients, with exercises that are beneficial and enjoyable.

The director of the Bionics Lab is Professor Jacob Rosen. Ji Ma, a Postdoctoral Researcher in the Bionics Lab created 
the template for the Virtual Reality games and helped the undergraduate researchers with any questions. 

Mike Ridgeway is majoring in Electrical Engineering at San Jose State University and would like to eventually 
pursue Graduate Studies.
